Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is an established versatile and reliable tool for flow measurements. This technique enables the instantaneous capture of velocity fields in both 2D and 3D domains across multiple points simultaneously, facilitating the measurement of quantities like vorticity and strain. Its application spans a broad range in fluid dynamics research, from microscopic to macroscopic scales and from subsonic to hypersonic regimes within atmospheric flows.
The data-intensive output format makes PIV the most suitable technique to take advantage of the rapid rise of artificial intelligence methods. This opens up new avenues for expanding the technique, adding to an already rich portfolio of solutions that extend PIV beyond velocity measurements, e.g. leveraging data assimilation, enforcing physical principles to derive thermodynamic properties, utilizing low-order modeling, and more. Additionally, the recent introduction of event-based technology is paving the way for real-time flow measurement, potentially enabling PIV to be integrated into the loop for flow control.
This course aims to cover the basics of PIV technique while acquainting participants with the latest advancements. It will offer a comprehensive overview of both planar and volumetric PIV, supplemented with various examples showcasing their applications across different flow scenarios. Additionally, it will review state-of-the-art methods for post-processing data. The lectures will include hands-on sessions, allowing attendees to practice PIV image processing and data analysis.
The course is primarily directed to forthcoming PIV practitioners who wish to become expert users and/or developers of PIV. No previous knowledge is required besides basic understanding of fluid flows. A lab visit is organized on the third day, to showcase some applications of PIV.
The lecture series will host a poster session, which will allow the participants to further exchange and interact with the lecturers. All the participants are encouraged to submit a 1-page abstract before 31 October 2024.
